Individual Groups:

Serving the Community

"Seeks to identify and put into practice appropriate ways of serving the community. It also seeks to monitor and provide support for the 'Open Door' initiative and other existing means of community service".

Area Representatives
The Area Reps are a group of people who, working with our ecumenical partners within the village, each have their own patch and undertake to welcome new people to the  village and to deliver the church  magazine. We are there when you need a friend and we keep the churches posted as to what is happening in the Parish.
Baptism
The church welcomes all those (young and old) who wish to be baptised into the faith. St Mary's aims to keep in contact with all children baptised at the church by using a series of cards, sent on the anniversary of the baptism, each one aimed at discussing questions of faith that may be relevant to the child’s particular age group.

Children's Society
Is a voluntary society of the Church of England and the Church in Wales, working with Christian values. It exists to help children and young people in need, irrespective of race, colour or creed. The Burley branch is well established in the village. Each year a varied programme of events aims to achieve a mix of activities to publicise the work of the Society, while at the same time raising funds. The committee is backed by a large group of supporters, local people of all ages, who contribute ideas or offer practical help at individual events. Everyone is welcome.

Thankyou to everyone who gave so generously at the Christingle service. The collection raised £810. Thanks also to the many people who helped to make the 350 Christingles—it was great fun and we did it in record time.

Our next event is a Coffee Morning on 3rd February in the Parish Rooms. We would appreciate help with this also, especially if you could make a cake or
provide edibles…. On the day would be great or
beforehand to Elaine Marsden 863990 or
Yvonne Edwards 862569.

Advance notice of Children’s Society Meal—March 30th at 7.30 in the Catholic Church Hall. Please may we recycle any unwanted Christmas presents as tombola prizes at this event. Same phone numbers……...or if you prefer, leave it clearly marked ‘Children’s Society’ at the Parish Office.

The Children's Society have a web site that you can visit.

Many thanks to all who bought calendars celebrating the link between our village and Tereli in Mali. They have produced a clear profit of £1,250, which is a wonderful contribution to make to Tereli and the Dogon region during a time of drought.

Of this money £250 will be sent to Zakari Saye who comes from the village and is in his 6th year at Medical School in the capital Bamako. For the past 2 years he has provided a health education programme for the children in his area in his vacation. This money will help him to fund his project.

The rest of the money will be sent to a small charity called JOLIBA, which works in the Dogon region. Joliba has 3 schemes to help relieve the growing food crisis.

  • To support enterprise credit schemes so women can invest in animals and other farming ventures, which will earn them money when the harvest is bad. (The men are often already seeking employment elsewhere)
  • To buy millet and cereals early in the season while prices are relatively cheap. The drought in the summer meant many cereal crops did not mature this year and people will suffer shortages as their supplies run out. Joliba will then be able to sell back the grain to people who cannot afford to buy when the prises rise.
  • To run food for work programmes. Food is given in exchange for locust and grasshopper eggs so these can be destroyed. This will reduce the on-going loss of crops to locust and grasshopper infestations.

It is good to know that people continue to support our link and that we can provide some help to people in Tereli at this difficult time. Thank you again to all who bought calendars.

Christian Aid have a web site that you can visit.

Church as Venue
In the past the Church has been used for diverse activities – from flower festivals to concerts. The church is keen to use its facilities to the best of its abilities and welcomes suggestions for the use of the church as a venue”.
Coffee Mornings/Rota
Every Sunday after the Morning Service we meet for coffee in the Church Lounge. We are always pleased to welcome new people on this Rota. All it entails is being there before the Service to set out the cups and saucers and after the Service to serve and then wash up. Your turn comes round approximately six monthly!.

The PCC also have a rota to host monthly coffee mornings on Saturdays in Parish Room.

Disability Discrimination
The Church has, in recent years, undergone significant works to make the services that the church provides accessible to all. The Church takes the work of making God accessible to all very seriously. A continuous programme of review is in place to ensure that the Church is constantly striving to improve access for all.

Disabled Pews are suitable for wheelchair users and attendants, and there is Level access into the church and church lounge

Hearing: There is an induction loop system

Visual: Large print news sheets, service sheets, and hymn books.

Under review: At present the toilet facility is not suitable for all types of disability, as it is accessed via two steps.

Magazine
The church publishes a magazine ten times each year. Much work is involved in compiling and producing the magazine, to ensure that it is both informative and a good read. Contributions of articles, information, and offers of help are always welcome.
Marriage Preparation
At St Mary’s we run an annual marriage preparation course spread over two evenings. All those marrying at St Mary’s are encouraged to attend. The first evening of the course aims to allow couples a chance to meet others “in the same boat”, whilst also providing some food for thought on the skills required to form a solid foundation to their marriage. The aim of the course is to give ideas on listening and communications skills, knowledge of each other and some of the causes and possible resolutions of common conflicts. Couple and group exercises are undertaken and couples are provided with exercises to take away and do by themselves. The second evening aims to introduce and explain some of the nuts and bolts that go to make the Christian marriage service.
Mothers' Union

On Wednesday 14th May we welcomed members of our Link Branch in Shelf to the Parish Centre. After welcoming everyone Sue, assisted by Margaret Sumner, led a short act of worship.
Our Speaker for the evening was Ruth Nield who is the MU Diocesan                  Co-ordinator for AFIA (Away From It All)  caravan holidays. Ruth told us that she believes she has the best job in the MU. She spoke enthusiastically and           humorously about her work illustrating her talk with slides of Filey, the site where the MU new mobile home is situated and of the splendid home itself which was bought and dedicated last year.
Ruth congratulated the members of the MU in the Diocese who together raised the £22,000 to buy the mobile home in just twelve months.
Sylvia Baty  gave the Vote of Thanks and presented a donation of £100 towards the work of AFIA. The evening ended with a buffet supper and an invitation from our friends to visit them in Shelf next May.

Theatre Group
Are a group of people who enjoy going to the theatre and yet do not always have anyone to go with. As a group we go to the theatre every six to eight weeks, usually Ilkley but it could be Leeds, Bradford or Harrogate. Transport is arranged.
Tiny Tots
Weekly meetings are held for mums and their 'Tiny Tots' each Wednesday at 12.15 pm during term time. Meetings are held in the  Church Lounge  and are ecumenical and informal. Aimed at babies and pre-school children, each meeting starts with a picnic lunch (juice provided for children and coffee for mums). A short story is read by a volunteer mum followed by an activity, usually colouring and sticking. A selection of toys are available for children to play with. The session finishes with songs, action rhymes and games.
Transport Service
If some have difficulty getting to church and would appreciate a lift, they can let the  Clergy or Church Wardens  know and they will put them in touch with someone who can help, perhaps on a regular basis. People who can help and have space in their cars, either occasionally or regularly, are always needed.
Youth Groups

Revelation!

Revelation! is a group which meets Sunday evenings for secondary school age children. We meet most Sunday evenings in term time at 1, Grange Road 7.30pm-8.45pm. The age range is from 10-17.

We are using a Scripture Union series, 'Get Real with God' looking at the letter of James and what it teaches us about both doing the right thing and having that relationship with God, for one without the other is not to be a complete Christian...

In January we have covered a ‘Stress Survival Kit’ (James 1: 2-8) consisting of four points and how we 1: Be Happy, 2: Get the point, (persevere) 3: Look at it from God’s point of view (get wisdom) 4: Hang on to God (Have faith)

‘Live it out’ (James 1:19-27) focuses on the importance of living out what you learn from God’s word 1- Anger – control it or lose it, 2-God’s word – forget it or do it, 3- Bad influence – let it in or keep it out

‘Faith Works’ (James 2:14-24) a session focussing on the connection between faith and its fruit – ‘good works’. Real faith in Jesus shows in the way we live.

Next month there will be a report on the Deanery Events (for 10-13’s, and 14-18’s) which are taking place at the end of January.

Meetings in February:

Sunday 4th February: Wash your mouth out! - James 3:1-12 – looking at the power of the words we speak and the need to let God be in control of what we say

Sunday 11th February and Sunday 18th February No Meeting as Half Term

Sunday 25th February: No Compromise – James 4:1-10 – Challenging us to make choices which please God – not always easy! At the centre of this is the need for a commitment to God

Sunday 4th March: Pray! – James 5: 13-18 – looking at when and how to pray

I’m really grateful that Nik Legge is willing to go on a volunteer youth worker course and is helping out with running the group.
