Village Schools

Historical Perspective:

As a result of reorganising the education provision within the area, Burley C of E Primary School (Aireville Terrace) finally closed its doors in July 2000. The school was originally founded in 1837 as Burley National School by the National Society, the Church of England’s educational branch at the time. At that time it was sited in Back Lane. A new building was opened on the Aireville Terrace site in 1898 and there have been only four head teachers since that time. One of its great strengths rested in the fact that many parents and grandparents of pupils were educated there! In addition Burley Middle School, previously a County School opened in 1972, was closed in July 2000, and a new primary school, Burley Oaks, was established on the same site in Langford Lane. Another Church of England Controlled School was opened on Sandholme Drive in 1976. It replaced the small school that had been in Burley Woodhead since the 1830s. That is why the school is now called Burley and Woodhead Church of England School.

Our school is a co-educational Church of England Primary School catering for children aged between 4 and 11 years old.  The current building was purpose-built in 1976, replacing the old and much smaller premises at Burley Woodhead where the school had been since 1832. The building is of a modern, semi-open plan design providing a pleasant and effective working environment, and now includes an extended hall/dining area and a new library and I.C.T. suite. There are extensive grounds that include a playground, playing field, conservation area, pond and stream.

In Burley & Woodhead C.E. Primary School the staff, both teachers and support staff, are dedicated to providing all the children with a firm foundation on which their educational future will be built. Children learn in an atmosphere, which is both stimulating and exciting, and each individual can develop her or his full learning potential.

The school is essentially a 'family' school and enjoys full support from parents. Our school places great value on its close links with the church and the local community. We place particular importance on involving parents through recognising and valuing their continuing role in the education of their children. By listening to their concerns, we hope to promote an atmosphere of mutual respect and a shared role in helping each child to reach his/her full potential. We develop appropriate codes of behaviour that support the values and aims of our school, ensuring that we can work together to provide the best possible education for all our children.

Burley Oaks Primary School

Burley Oaks Primary School is a new school, established in September 2000 as a result of the re-organisation of schools in the Bradford district. We are fortunate to have inherited the premises of the former Burley Middle School. As such our facilities include a specialist room for science and food technology, a specialist room for art and design technology and an  l.C.T. suite. Thanks to the generosity of our School Association, we are currently establishing our school library.   We regard ourselves as a friendly and welcoming school, which encourages parents to take an active role in their children's education. We are happy to see parents in school as visitors - even happier to see them as helpers! We are keen to build upon the positive relations with the local community established by the two schools which we have now replaced.
